Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
- Fresh berries, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Cut the loaf of bread into bite-sized cubes, aiming for about 1-inch pieces.
- In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and whisk until well beaten and frothy.
- Pour in 1 cup of whole milk and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix well.
- Add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (if using) to the mixture, followed by 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Stir until well combined and set aside.
- Gently fold the cubed bread into the batter using a spatula, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Let the bread soak for 10-15 minutes.
- While the bread is soaking, heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1/4 cup of unsalted butter. Allow it to melt and bubble without browning.
- Using a slotted spoon, scoop out a portion of the soaked bread and place it in the skillet. Cook about 8-10 pieces at a time.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side.
- Transfer the cooked bites to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess butter. Repeat with remaining bread, adding more butter as needed.
- Arrange the cooked French toast bites on a serving platter. Drizzle with warm maple syrup and dust with powdered sugar if desired.
- Garnish with fresh berries and serve warm.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, let the bread soak in the batter for longer.
- Feel free to experiment with different types of bread or add chocolate chips for a sweet twist.
- These bites can be served as a breakfast, brunch, or even a dessert.
