Ingredients
Scale
- 3–4 pounds beef brisket
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup diced tomatoes (canned or fresh)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8–10 corn or flour tortillas
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
- 1 lime, cut into wedges (for serving)
- Optional toppings: diced onions, sliced radishes, avocado, or sour cream
Instructions
- Pat the brisket dry with paper towels to ensure a good sear.
- Season the brisket generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
- In a large Dutch oven or heavy pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once shimmering, add the brisket.
- Sear the brisket for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pot, add the diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent, scraping up browned bits.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth, stirring to combine, and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Return the seared brisket to the pot, ensuring its submerged in the liquid.
- Cover the pot and reduce heat to low. Braise for 3-4 hours, or until fork-tender. Alternatively, braise in the oven at 300°F (150°C).
- Check occasionally, adding more broth or water if the liquid level gets low.
- Carefully remove the brisket from the pot and let it rest for 10-15 minutes on a cutting board.
- Shred the brisket into bite-sized pieces using two forks.
- Return the shredded brisket to the pot with the braising liquid and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
- If using corn tortillas, warm them on a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side.
Notes
- Feel free to customize your tacos with your favorite toppings such as diced onions, sliced radishes, avocado, or sour cream.
- For a spicier kick, consider adding jalapeños or hot sauce to the braising liquid.
