Brown Sugar Cold Foam: The Ultimate Guide to Making It At Home

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

Creamy, sweet Brown Sugar Cold Foam, easy to make at home. Perfect topping for cold brew or iced coffee.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons 2% milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ice, for serving
  • Cold brew coffee or iced coffee, for serving

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of water.
  2. Heat and stir: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the brown sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth (2-3 minutes). Be careful not to let it burn!
  3. Simmer: Once the sugar is dissolved, let the mixture simmer gently for about 1 minute. This will help thicken the syrup slightly.
  4. Cool completely: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool completely. You can speed up the cooling process by transferring the syrup to a small bowl and placing it in the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes.
  5. Store (optional): If you’re not using the syrup immediately, you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  6. Combine ingredients: In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the heavy cream, milk, brown sugar syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  7. Froth the mixture:
    • Using a milk frother: Froth until thick and foamy (30-60 seconds). Be careful not to over-froth.
    • Using a French press: Pour the mixture into the French press, secure the lid, and pump the plunger up and down vigorously for about 30-60 seconds, or until the mixture is thick and foamy.
    • Using an immersion blender: Blend for short bursts, checking the consistency frequently.
    • Using a whisk (manual method): Whisk vigorously until it becomes thick and foamy. This may take a few minutes.
  8. Check the consistency: The cold foam should be thick and creamy, with a texture similar to whipped cream. It should be able to hold its shape for a few seconds. If it’s too thin, continue frothing for a bit longer. If it’s too thick, add a splash more milk and gently stir.
  9. Prepare your coffee: Fill a glass with ice. Pour cold brew coffee or iced coffee over the ice, leaving about an inch or two of space at the top for the cold foam. You can adjust the amount of coffee to your liking.
  10. Add the cold foam: Gently spoon the brown sugar cold foam over the top of the coffee. You can also pour it slowly over the back of a spoon to create a layered effect.
  11. Optional garnish: If you want to get fancy, you can sprinkle a little bit of brown sugar or cinnamon on top of the cold foam. You can also drizzle a little extra brown sugar syrup over the top.
  12. Enjoy immediately: The best part! Grab a straw or simply sip the coffee through the cold foam. The combination of the cold brew and the sweet, creamy cold foam is absolutely heavenly.

Notes

  • Different sweeteners: If you don’t have brown sugar, you can use other sweeteners like granulated sugar, maple syrup, or honey. Keep in mind that the flavor will be slightly different.
  • Dairy-free option: To make this recipe dairy-free, use coconut cream or cashew cream instead of heavy cream, and almond milk or oat milk instead of regular milk.
  • Spiced cold foam: Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to the cold foam for a warm and cozy flavor.
  • Chocolate cold foam: Add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to the cold foam for a chocolatey twist.
  • Caramel cold foam: Use caramel syrup instead of brown sugar syrup for a delicious caramel flavor.
  • Experiment with extracts: Try adding different extracts like almond extract, peppermint extract, or hazelnut extract to the cold foam for a unique flavor.
  • Make it boozy: For an adult treat, add a splash of your favorite liqueur, such as Irish cream or coffee liqueur, to the cold foam.
  • Adjust sweetness: Adjust the amount of brown sugar syrup to your liking. If you prefer a less sweet cold foam, use less syrup. If you prefer a sweeter cold foam, use more syrup.
  • Use different types of coffee: Try using different types of coffee, such as espresso or French press coffee, to create different flavor profiles.
  • Add a pinch of salt: Don’t skip the pinch of salt! It helps to balance the sweetness and enhance the other flavors.
