  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Enjoy tender cube steaks simmered in a savory sauce made with onions, garlic, and beef broth. This comforting dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or rice, making it an ideal choice for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cube steaks (about 1 pound total)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons water (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

  1. Season the cube steaks generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Dredge each steak in flour, ensuring they are well-coated. Shake off excess flour and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add cube steaks to the skillet, cooking in batches if necessary. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from skillet and cover with aluminum foil to keep warm.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce, stirring to combine and scraping up browned bits from the skillet. Add dried thyme and paprika, allowing the sauce to come to a gentle simmer.
  4. If desired, mix cornstarch with water in a small bowl until smooth. Gradually add to the simmering sauce while stirring continuously. Let simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes to thicken.
  5. Return cooked cube steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Spoon sauce over the steaks and cover. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes to meld flavors and keep steaks moist. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  6. Serve cube steaks hot, drizzled with sauce. They pair well with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives for added color and freshness.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine to the sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
