  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings 1x

Description

Enjoy a warm and healthy hot chocolate made with almond milk, cocoa powder, and maple syrup. This creamy drink is perfect for cold days and can be personalized with your favorite toppings for an extra treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon dark chocolate chips (optional)
  • Whipped coconut cream (for topping, optional)
  • Shaved dark chocolate or cocoa nibs (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, pour in the 2 cups of unsweetened almond milk. If you prefer a creamier texture, feel free to use whole milk or oat milk instead.
  2. Turn the heat to medium-low. We want to warm the milk gently without boiling it. Stir occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  3. While the milk is warming, in a small bowl, combine the 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, and a pinch of sea salt. This will help to create a smooth mixture without clumps.
  4. Once the milk is warm (but not boiling), add the cocoa mixture to the saucepan. Whisk it together until fully combined.
  5. Add in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  6. If you’re a fan of warm spices, sprinkle in the 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  7. Continue to whisk the mixture over medium-low heat until everything is well combined and heated through (about 3-5 minutes).
  8. If you’re feeling indulgent, toss in the 1 tablespoon of dark chocolate chips. Stir until they melt completely into the mixture.
  9. Taste your hot chocolate and adjust sweetness with more maple syrup or honey if desired.
  10. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the hot chocolate into your favorite mug.
  11. Top with whipped coconut cream and sprinkle shaved dark chocolate or cocoa nibs on top.
  12. Enjoy your delicious, healthy hot chocolate!

Notes

  • For storage, let the hot chocolate cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stove over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Feel free to double or triple the recipe for larger batches, adjusting the sweetener to taste.
