Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water, unsalted butter, and salt. Place it over medium heat and bring to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally until the butter melts completely.
- Once boiling, remove from heat and add the all-purpose flour all at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the dough forms a ball, about 1-2 minutes.
- Allow the dough to cool for about 5 minutes to prevent the eggs from cooking when added.
- After cooling, add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and ground cinnamon for flavor.
- Fold in the chopped nuts for added crunch.
- In a deep frying pan or heavy-bottomed pot, pour enough vegetable oil to fill it about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Test readiness by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil; it should sizzle and rise.
- Using a piping bag fitted with a large star tip, fill it with the churro dough. Alternatively, use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off.
- Pipe small bite-sized pieces of dough (about 1 inch long) into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and puffed. Use a slotted spoon to turn them gently.
- Remove the churro bites from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- In a shallow bowl, combine granulated sugar and a pinch of ground cinnamon. Roll the warm churro bites in this mixture until fully coated.
- Serve warm, optionally with a chocolate or caramel dipping sauce. For extra flair, sprinkle additional chopped nuts on top.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to regain crispiness. For longer storage, freeze in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for up to a month. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C).
- Get creative by experimenting with different nuts or adding chocolate chips to the dough. Drizzle melted chocolate over the top for an indulgent finish.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for optimal frying.
- Feel free to customize the nuts or add spices to suit your taste.
