Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 medium potatoes (for mashed potatoes)
  • 1/2 cup milk (for mashed potatoes)
  • 4 tablespoons butter (for mashed potatoes)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for mashed potatoes)
  • 1 cup frozen peas (or your choice of vegetable)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined, being careful not to overmix.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval steak, about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the shaped steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside, leaving drippings in the skillet.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and chopped onion. Sauté over medium heat for about 5 minutes until tender.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well. Cook for an additional minute.
  6. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce, then bring to a simmer.
  7. Let the gravy simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Adjust consistency with more broth if needed. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Simmer together for a couple of minutes.
  9. Peel and chop potatoes into even-sized chunks. Place in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil.
  10. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and return to pot.
  11. Add milk and butter, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add more milk or butter for extra creaminess if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider incorporating herbs like thyme or parsley into the gravy.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version of the Salisbury steak.
  • Feel free to use fresh vegetables instead of frozen peas for a seasonal touch.
