Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (for whipped topping)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for whipped topping)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped topping)
- Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the 2 cups of whole milk and 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Place the saucepan over medium heat.
- As the milk mixture heats up, whisk in the 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Whisk continuously to avoid lumps and create a smooth texture.
- Once warm (but not boiling), add in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to enhance the chocolate flavor.
- Add the 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and whisk until melted and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and set aside while preparing the whipped topping.
- In a large mixing bowl, pour in the 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Chill the bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes before starting.
- Using an electric mixer, beat the heavy cream on medium speed until it starts to thicken (about 1-2 minutes).
- Add the 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, then continue beating until stiff peaks form.
- Be careful not to over-whip the cream; stop mixing once stiff peaks are achieved.
- Stir the prepared hot chocolate base to ensure everything is well mixed.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs, filling them about three-quarters full.
- Generously dollop or pipe the whipped cream on top of each mug.
- Garnish with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder.
- Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!
