  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Indulge in a rich and creamy whipped hot chocolate made with whole milk, heavy cream, and semi-sweet chocolate. Topped with homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings, this luxurious treat is perfect for cozying up on chilly days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for whipped topping)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for whipped topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped topping)
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the 2 cups of whole milk and 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Place the saucepan over medium heat.
  2. As the milk mixture heats up, whisk in the 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Whisk continuously to avoid lumps and create a smooth texture.
  3. Once warm (but not boiling), add in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  4. Add the 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and whisk until melted and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and set aside while preparing the whipped topping.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, pour in the 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Chill the bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes before starting.
  7. Using an electric mixer, beat the heavy cream on medium speed until it starts to thicken (about 1-2 minutes).
  8. Add the 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, then continue beating until stiff peaks form.
  9. Be careful not to over-whip the cream; stop mixing once stiff peaks are achieved.
  10. Stir the prepared hot chocolate base to ensure everything is well mixed.
  11. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs, filling them about three-quarters full.
  12. Generously dollop or pipe the whipped cream on top of each mug.
  13. Garnish with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder.
  14. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!
